Ytstetinden is a magnificent mountain that is beautifully located facing the fjord. It offers a fantastic view in all directions, and the largest part of the trail goes through open and accessible mountain terrain.
Walk up the forest road from the eastern end of the car park until you reach a small summer mountain farm just below the tree line. Keep to the right of the river as you walk up along the path. The path crosses the river just above the tree line. Follow the path along a clear mountain edge where it is signposted to Ytstetind and Remmemstind. From here, follow the path as it drifts to the right towards Båtreset, aiming for approximately the lowest point on the hilltop. There may be some snow here, especially early in the season, so try to find the shortest way over the snow. The main path is unclear, but there are many smaller paths to follow. The trail continues through gentle mountain terrain further up Båtreset and drifts to the left towards Ytstetind. You can see the entire ridge down Båtreset. You can walk to the top either through the middle of the mountain ridge or along the edge to the left. The final section up to the top (about 200 altitude meters) goes through rocky terrain that changes to a scree slope. If you keep to the middle of the ridge, gradually move further right as you walk up towards the top to avoid the steepest sections. The ascent of the final section is 35 degrees, which can feel a little steep. Early in the season, there may be a lot of snow along the trail. The conditions at the mountain top are strongly influenced by the weather, so please check the weather forecast both before and during the hike. Do not take unnecessary risks and go back if the weather conditions change. You might not be able to find a trail shelter along the way.
