Sunndal is wild and beautiful, offering mighty mountains and spectacular waterfalls. Not only are they a feast for the eyes – the waterfalls and the hydraulic power have also laid the foundation for today’s modern industrial society of Sunndal and are therefore a core part of our identity.
Sunndal is situated between two of Norway’s most famous mountain areas; Dovrefjell – Sunndalsfjella National Park and Trollheimen. Trollheimen, with the valley Innerdalen as a natural highlight, is a unique mountain area in many ways. Its location between different climatic zones creates distinctive geological conditions. The result is a great variety of landscapes and habitats, as well as a large diversity of plants and animals.
Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella nasjonalpark is a Norwegian National Park situated in the mountain area of Dovrefjell and the Sunndalen mountains, a natural meeting point of the counties Sør-Trøndelag, Møre og Romsdal and Oppland. Among the peaks, you will find more than 200 glaciers, lush mountain valleys, a myriad of mountain fishing lakes and several traces from earlier times. If you are lucky, you may also discover musk and wild reindeer in these areas.
Experience Norway’s most beautiful mountain valley, cascading waterfalls, roads tougher than Trollstigen and peaks raging 1700 metres above the fjord.
When visiting Sunndal, it is hard to avoid Innerdalen, mentioned as the world’s most beautiful mountain valley and one of the main entrances to Trollheimen. Be sure not to miss the waterfall Åmotan, where five rivers meet.
If you are travelling with a car, you may also experience a winding mountain road which has more hairpin bends than Trollstigen itself, or you can go for a hike and try to reach one of the many peaks above 1700 metres. There are many possibilities!
